Akihabara, also known as “Akiba”, is an internationally-renowned shopping area for digital appliances and consumer electronics. It is located on the eastern side of the central Chiyoda-ku (Chiyoda ward). There are hundreds of stores specializing in computer, electronic, and anime products, as well as many duty-free shops.

In recent years, animation-related shops at the Akihabara district have attracted much attention. Now the district is strongly identified with animation and manga (cartoon) subculture, with legions of people walking around on weekends known as Akiba-kei (Akihabara style).
