Tokyo, capital of Japan, is a metropolitan with 13 million inhabitants. The city of Tokyo is divided into 23 wards, 26 cities and 13 small towns, covering 2187 sq. km. This huge, sprawling metropolis was known as Edo, which was the seat of the Tokugawa Shogunate since Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government in 1603. After the Meiji Restoration of 1868, the emperor and capital were moved from Kyoto to Edo and the city was renamed as Tokyo.
