Yamagata is well known as the production center of cherry, as well as the venue for the Hanagasa Festival. During the festival, thousands of dancers holding hanagasa (flower hats) adorned with flowers, parade through the main streets of Yamagata City. Other popular destinations include Yamadera (Risshaku-ji), historical temple built in the 9th century, and Zao, a ski resort suitable for beginners as well as professionals.
