Located less than an hour south of Tokyo, Kamakura is one of the most favored tourist destination in Japan, whose stories cannot be described fully without mentioning its history. Kamakura became the political center in 1192 when Shogun Minamoto Yoritomo established Bakufu, a military government that ruled Japan for over a century. Today, the atmosphere of old Japan still remains in Kamakura in many temples, shrines and other historical monuments. Particularly famous are the Great Buddha Statue (Daibutsu) and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu shrine. Also, Kamakura is surrounded by mountains and beaches, and has many hiking trails.
