Matsuyama
|
Matsuyama, the largest city in Shikoku Island, is a transport hub and popular tourist destination, well-known for its beautiful Matsuyama Castle, which is considered one of the finest among Japan’s remaining medieval castles. The castle itself was completed in 1627, and its turrets and other parts were restored to the original style after unfortunate destruction by fire and bombardment. Dogo Hot Spring, another historic attraction in the area, is known for its role in a classic Japanese novel “Botchan” by famous novelist Natsume Soseki. Also, Matsuyama is home to seven temples for the 88 Sacred Temple Pilgrimage, including Ishite-ji temple.
