Along with Kyoto, Nikko is one of the best destinations to see ancient Japan with over 1,200 years of history, especially known for Tosho-gu Shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, the Rinnoji Temple and Futarasan Shrine, those which were selected as an UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999.
Other picturesque locations such as Chuzenji Lake, Kegon Falls, and Mt. Nantai draw visitors, too. Also, located nearby Nikko, Kinugawa is recommended hot spring district in a relaxed atmosphere.
Kinugawa Onsen is a popular hot spring resort town along the Kinugawa River in Tochigi prefecture. The mildly alkaline springs are said to be discovered in 1752. Today, the town is centered around the large hotels lining the riverbank, and has several public baths which are available to anybody.
Additionally, there are many other attractions in and around Kinugwa Onsen. The Tobu World Square, a theme park, is located within walking distance from Kinugawa, and the park boasts 102 exquisitely crafted 1:25 scale model of the most famous, World Cultural and Heritage Sites, complete with 140,000 miniature people.
One of the highlights in the area is the Kinugawa River cruise which offers you a wonderful experience of the dynamic flow of this river. The ride is relatively smooth and enjoyable for a wide age range.
