Kusatsu

Situated in Gunma prefecture, Kusatsu is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan. It was listed as one of the “Three Famed Hot Springs” by Confucian poet Hayashi Razan of the Edo Period, along with Gero in Gifu and Arima in Hyogo. Kusatsu Onsen (hot spring) is known for its large volumes of high quality spring water, which fill the town with the smell of sulfur. The town is popular particularly among women because it is said its hot spring water makes the skin beautiful. Also, in winter, people visit Kusatsu to enjoy skiing or snowboarding.
