Kyoto, a historic cultural city that had been the capital for over 1000 years, is one of the most popular destinations in Japan for both domestic and international tourists. The city itself is laid out on a grid. There remains numerous temples and shrines built during a long period, with 17 World Heritage Sites such as Kiyomizu-dera temple, and Nijo Castle. There are tons of sites and things that are recommended to see and do in Kyoto, but do visit at least one or two ancient temples, Gion district for geisha and maiko, and try Kyoto cuisines.
