Nagano Prefecture, situated inland in central Japan, is best represented by its beautiful nature and rich cultural heritage. There are many scenic sites in the prefecture, such as Kamikochi highland resort, where magnificent views of the surrounding mountains can be enjoyed. Also in Nagano is internationally renowned Karuizawa town, a famous high-class summer retreat, which was once populated by many westerners. Matsumoto is the second largest city in Nagano. Most tourists come to Matsumoto for the beautifully preserved national treasure, Matsumoto Castle. The prefecture is also a gateway to the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.
