Tsugaru Peninsula in Japan
Kawakura Sai
The Kawakura-Sai-no-Kawara-Jizoson is a famous spiritual spot. There are about 2000 jizo, the guardian deity of children, enshrined there together with things the dead people used to use when they were still alive. All the jizo have make-ups and clothes on. Surrounding them are their belongings like shoes, clothes, bags, and so on.
Next to the Jizoson is a building which houses lots of dolls. In Tsugaru, Aomori, it is a tradition to have a wedding ceremony for those died before getting married. The dead will be married to a doll. Therefore, in this building, many husband and wife dolls are enshrined with a photograph of a person who died before getting married.
