Hatsumode in the Kinomiya Shrine, Yawatano, Ito
Happy New Year! I hope this year will be a great one for all of you.
I went back to my hometown Ito in Shizuoka Prefecture to spend the New Year’s Day with my parents. How I enjoyed the day was a typical: ate Osechi ryori (おせち料理), what most people in Japan eat at the beginning of the new year and many of the food items represent prosperity, good fortune and health, went to Hatsumode(初詣), the first visit to a shrine of the New Year, and gave Otoshidama (お年玉), money to my nephews.

Next day, on January 2nd, I went to the Norizome (乗り初め) at the port of Yawatano, where takes only three minutes by car from my house. The ceremony is held for the local fishermen’s first ship ride of the year and prays for safe and the good catch.
Though the Norizome was started from 6:30 am, there are a number of people attending and waiting for freebies, such as mochi, miso soup, and even money (coins).
The view from the port was outstanding and I felt this year would be a great one!
